Himiko, The Warrior Queen is a historical short story by Kazuko Nashimura, a Japanese who have lived in USA for circa 20 years and several other countries. The story is about Empress Jingu, or Queen Himiko, the wife of Emperor Chuai, who lived from 169-269 AD.

Review

Although the story is presented in a narrative form with Empress Jingu as the main character through first- and third-person POVs, it begins with a prologue about the Katari-be tribe, storytellers in ancient Japan, whose role was eventually replaced by written records influenced by Chinese kanji. This is followed by the story of the creation of the world by Izanami and Izanagi, as well as the origins of the Japanese imperial lineage. 

Despite being conveyed in a narrative style, the story feels more like an informative historical account. There’s no sense of suspense about what happens next or sadness over Emperor Chuai’s death; everything simply flows. The only striking elements are the awe-inspiring oracle of the Empress and the ancestral background of Japan’s emperors, which I personally relate to monotheistic religious texts. This story has sparked my interest in delving deeper into East Asian history, an area I admittedly know little about. However, it’s unfortunate that the text lacks kanji characters, which could have provided additional context for each name or term in Japanese due to the inherent ambiguity of kanji characters.

Conclusion

Therefore, Himiko, The Warrior Queen is an excellent read for those who want to learn about Japanese history through a narrative lens.

Himiko, The Warrior Queen adalah cerita pendek historis oleh Kazuko Nashimura tentang Maharani Jingu atau Ratu Himiko, istri Kaisar Chuai yang hidup pada tahun 169-269 M.

Meskipun dipaparkan dalam bentuk cerita dengan tokoh utama Maharani Jingu lewat POV 1 dan 3, semuanya didahului dengan cerita tentang klan Katari-be selaku penutur kisah-kisah di tanah Jepang yang tergantikan oleh sistem pencatatan lewat pengaruh kanji Mandarin sebagai prolog, lalu dilanjutkan dengan kisah penciptaan bumi oleh Izanami dan Izanagi serta awal mula kekaisaran di Jepang, rasanya tetap terasa sebagai narasi sejarah yang informatif. Tidak ada rasa penasaran bagaimana kelanjutannya atau rasa sedih atas kematian Kaisar Chuai, semuanya hanya mengalir begitu saja. Kecuali rasa takjub pada kekuatan meramal sang Maharani dan seluk beluk nenek moyang para kaisar Jepang yang saya kaitkan dengan risalah dalam agama monoteisme. Dengan cerita ini, saya jadi ingin mengulik lebih dalam tentang sejarah Asia Timur karena ketidaktahuan akannya. Nan disayangkan adalah tidak adanya tulisan kanji yang dapat memberikan keterangan tersendiri untuk setiap nama atau kata dalam bahasa Jepang karena ambiguitas karakter kanji.

Maka, Himiko sangat cocok dibaca bagi yang ingin mengetahui sejarah Jepang lewat narasi cerita.
